A record quarter lifts the stock

Rivian delivered a record 19,248 units from July through September, and its shareholders saw the stock rise in after-hours trading. [1][2] The move followed the release of the company's Q3 2026 earnings results. [2]

Deliveries were up 46 percent year-over-year. [2]

The R2 takes the lead

The R2 has become Rivian's best-selling model, and its first deliveries reached customers in June. [1] CEO RJ Scaringe said the R2 became Rivian's best-selling vehicle by volume during the quarter. [3]

Scaringe said the R2 ramp-up is critical for Rivian reaching positive gross margin on R2. [1] Rivian reiterated that it expects the R2 to have a positive gross margin by the end of the year. [1]

Scaringe has also said Rivian will reach profitability this year on a per-unit production basis with the R2. [1] He pointed to progress on Rivian's autonomy platform and its Point to Point technology. [3]

The revised 2026 guidance

Rivian's 2026 guidance revisions cover expected improvements in vehicle deliveries, pre-tax adjusted earnings and capital expenditures. [1] On deliveries, the company raised the lower end of its full-year forecast to 67,000 to 70,000 vehicles from a previous range of 65,000 to 70,000. [3]

Rivian attributed the improvement in its pre-tax adjusted earnings guidance to better-than-expected regulatory credit sales, an IEEPA tariff refund receivable in the third quarter, and expected higher vehicle deliveries. [1] Capital expenditure is forecast at $1.4 billion to $1.5 billion. [3]

Rivian ended the quarter with $5.5 billion in cash and short-term investments. [3]

What this means for you

If you hold Rivian shares, the stock rose after hours following the Q3 2026 results. [2] The numbers to track are the full-year delivery range of 67,000 to 70,000 vehicles and the capital expenditure forecast of $1.4 billion to $1.5 billion. [3]

If you are weighing an R2, it is now the company's best-selling model by volume. [3][1] The milestone to watch is Rivian's expectation of a positive gross margin on the R2 by the end of the year. [1]
